How to Practice the DET Writing Sample on Prepingo

A strong Writing Sample is not produced by a clever template. It comes from developing one relevant idea clearly while the clock is visible.

This walkthrough shows the complete Prepingo journey: finding a Writing Sample prompt, composing a timed response, choosing free practice or AI evaluation, reading the feedback, and reopening the attempt later.

What the Writing Sample workspace looks like

The prompt stays above a large editor, while the timer and live word counter remain visible. Save Practice records the response without using AI; Full AI Evaluation submits it for a detailed practice assessment.

Step-by-step: complete one useful attempt

  1. Read the complete prompt and identify every instruction before typing.
  2. Use the first 20–30 seconds to choose one clear position or experience and two supporting details.
  3. Write a direct opening, develop the details with specific examples, and finish with a meaningful final sentence.
  4. Watch the live word counter, but prioritize a complete answer over padding the response.
  5. Choose Save Practice for repetition or Full AI Evaluation when you want diagnostic feedback.

These screens show what the learner actually enters or records. Use them to understand the natural order of the task before you practise under time pressure.

The strategy to practise—not a memorized trick

The official DET measures developed language, not memorized paragraphs. Build a repeatable thinking process that still produces an original answer.

  • Answer the exact question in the first two sentences.
  • Prefer specific nouns and verbs over vague filler such as “many things” or “very good.”
  • Connect ideas with natural logic: cause, contrast, example, and consequence.
  • Reserve the final 20 seconds for missing words, verb forms, and punctuation.

Plan briefly, write continuously, then revise the mistakes most likely to damage clarity.

How scoring and feedback work in Prepingo

Full AI Evaluation returns an indicative score, the submitted response, and focused feedback. Treat the score as practice evidence—not an official DET score—and turn the recommendation into the goal for your next response.

Use Attempt History to prove you are improving

One score is only a snapshot. Open Attempt History above the question to review previous answers, scores, and feedback. Compare the same error category across several attempts: spelling, response development, vocabulary range, pronunciation, comprehension, or time management. Your target is not simply “more questions”; it is fewer repeated mistakes.

Common mistakes to eliminate

  • Writing a memorized introduction that does not answer the prompt.
  • Listing ideas without explaining why they matter.
  • Using complex words incorrectly merely to sound advanced.
  • Submitting immediately without checking incomplete sentences.

Your next 15-minute practice session

  1. Complete one five-minute response without assistance.
  2. Read the result and choose one improvement target.
  3. Rewrite only the weakest paragraph in three minutes.
  4. Open Attempt History and compare clarity, development, and repeated grammar errors.

Format note: Prepingo is an independent practice platform and is not endorsed by Duolingo. DET formats can change. Use the official DET readiness resources for current certified-test rules, then use Prepingo to build familiarity, repeat targeted skills, and obtain practice feedback.
